Does Diabetes Cause Swallowing problems?

June 15th, 2009 Jerry

Diabetes QuestionsI know someone that occasionally has problems swallowing when he is eating. It makes him feel like he is about to choke, as the food doesn’t go down. He is a diabetic. Is diabetes a contributing factor if someone is having a hard time swallowing?

No. Having scar tissue or a stricture in the esophagus would be the cause of this. He could schedule an endoscopy to have this checked out and if there is a narrowed area, they can stretch it back out and he won’t have probably again for a while (this has a tendency to come back).

I am diabetic, and took the diabetic teaching course when I was diagnosed.

I have never heard of this.

It could be….Diabetes either type 1 or 2 will effect body systems and organs depending on the individual depending on how that particular system or organ is susceptible to increased sugar, ….when it comes to diabetes it may be very serious or very mild but it is a progressive disease……It is known to damage the esophagus of many diabetics, (though not common).
