The Health Benefits Of Beer And Wine
From time to time, there will be a study published that claims to prove that drinking a little of substance ‘X’ will improve your healthyness. But it turns out that this isn’t solely about pouring a little red wine into your wine glasses at the end of the working day. It turns out that scientists have something positive to say about practically everything, because even the humble pint-glass contains the key to a longer lifespan. According to a team of Spanish researchers, a pint of beer a day is apparently a way of keeping diabetes and high blood pressure at bay. Stressing the importance of the ever unreliable ‘healthy diet’, the researchers even go as far as claiming that some of the respondents were capable of losing weight by drinking a regular pint.
The sample size is not massive, but not so stupidly small that the research is completely unvalid. For a not entirely clear reason, 1,249 men and women involved in the research are all over 57 years old, so the validity to all age groups is worthy of questioning. It’s also worth mentioning that these 57 year olds were all Mediterranean, and thus their diets contained typically healthier Mediterranean staples like Pasta. In the opinion of the researchers, beer is in no way to blame for obesity among the typical European lout. It’s a complex balance and as you drink too much, focus on fatty food types or simply neglect exercise, you undermine the findings.
It’s probably not worth throwing away your wine gifts just yet then: wine is still the most valid way to drink and be healthy. Containing folic acid, iron, various vitamins and calcium, Beer still has its benefits (though these things can be just as harmful and good in certain situations and again, in excess). Missing from the cocktail of positive contents are Antioxidants. Among the lofty claims attributed to Antioxidants are the repair of cell damage and the reduction in the risk of cancer. But then, even Whiskey is supposed to be good for you. Supposedly the extra ellagic acid eats up rogue cells. But if you’re now breaking into the drinks cabinet to grab the whiskey glasses or something else, remember that the key word is: moderation.
